Reiki Knowledge

What is Reiki?

Reiki is energy, energy from the universe used for healing.

Each of us is born with a certain amount of healing energy that can be used to heal ourselves and others. A Reiki attunement opens up the body so the practitioner has greater access to healing energy.

How Does Reiki Work?

Sometimes the flow of Ki within the body can become restricted by illness, emotion, or injury. Reiki energy can change these restrictions, restoring balance and wholeness to the body, mind and spirit. As Reiki flows through the channels and meridians of the body, the energy vibration in the affected areas is raised, thus clearing the restricted pathways and restoring the body, mind and spirit to a whole and harmonious state.

What happens in a Reiki session?

Reiki treatments are given with the client fully clothed. The Reiki practitioner’s hands are gently placed on the body in various positions that correspond to the major organs, endocrine system and the chakras, and then the practitioner channels universal life energy through her hands to the client.

Treatments are usually experienced as relaxing, meditative and peaceful. Sometimes buried emotions come to the surface for healing. After a Reiki treatment, most people experience a greater sense of well-being and a greater connection to the divine within. Reiki treatments are performed in a tranquil environment, allowing the beauty of the spirit to unfold.

How do I prepare for a session?

Be well hydrated and dress comfortably.

History of Reiki

Throughout time, there have always been healing traditions that used subtle energy. Reiki
is an energy practice formed from those ancient healing traditions.

Mikao Usui, who rediscovered the healing techniques we know as Reiki, was born in Japan in 1865. Mikao Usui, or Usui Sensei as his students called him, studied in China and Europe. Some of the subjects he studied included medicine, psychology, religion and the art of divination.

Usui Sensei was interested in healing. With many healing techniques, the practitioner builds up their healing energies which become depleted when used. Usui Sensei was interested in learning a healing method that did not deplete one's energy.

In order to discover a solution to a personal problem, Usui Sensei enrolled in a twenty-one-day Buddhist course. It was during this training that Usui Sensei came to understand how to solve his personal problems. Later he discovered he had also received the gift of healing. Skills learned in his studies helped him develop his system of Reiki healing. He opened a clinic in Tokyo where he gave Reiki treatments and taught classes.

Reiki is now practiced and taught throughout the world.

This site uses a number of kanji. If you are unfamiliar with these symbols, they are a form of iconographic Japanese writing that the Japanese adopted from the Chinese. Several decades ago, the kanji were updated, and many were simplified, leading to an old form and a new form. The kanji used here are defined below:
